Dr. Stuart J. Shafer and Stacy Smith, PA-C, are honored to practice Neurology in Indian River County since 1997 and 2000, respectively. They believe that each individual patient is not just a number or a chart full of papers, but a part of our family.

Neurodiagnostics Technologist
Bryon is originally from the foothills of north Georgia. He has been in the field of neurology since 2009 and he has been focused on Electroneurodiagnostics since 2010. He is a registered nerve conduction study technologist through the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists. He is also a certified medical assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants. He is an active member of both associations as well as an active member of ASET – The Neurodiagnostic Society, American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, and The American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. He also has significant experience in performing other Neurodiagnostic modalities including electroencephalography and evoked potentials. His background includes motor sports, computer programming and metalworking. His hobbies include going to the beach, swimming, and as he puts it, “always learning something new.”
CLINICAL STAFF
Melissa has been another mainstay in caring and assisting VBNRI patients since 2014. Her ability to multi task while continuing to engage the patient in a caring and friendly way is appreciated by patients in our clinic as she too works as Certified Nursing Assistant handling and implementing all the duties required to assure consistent top-level patient care. She is IV certified allowing her to care for all spectrum of IV patients.
Melissa, enjoys spending type with her daughter, Kayden. She enjoys going to the beach, Walt Disney World, watching her favorite college football team, Florida State University, as well as working on her house.
Melissa is a dedicated employee to the Vero Beach Neurology family and is a fundamental component of this team.
Clinical Staff
Kim has been a mainstay in caring for and assisting VBNRI patients for over 10 years. Her friendly character and caring smile is welcomed by patients everyday as she works in our clinic as a Medical Assistant handling and implementing all the duties required to assure consistent top-level patient care. Kim is IV certified allowing her to manage and monitor patients while receiving IV infusion services in the office.
Personally, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, Charlotte, playing outside in the rain or doing crafts. When not spending time with her daughter she is a dedicated sports fan for football, hockey and Nascar.
Kim is an integral part of our Vero Beach Neurology family. She goes above and beyond for her patients to provide medical and non-medical assistance.
Maria has been the receptionist at Vero Beach Neurology for nearly a year. She has a CNA received in 2013.
Personally she enjoys time with her children, a son and a daughter.
Her favorite quote is “Feet, what do I need you for? When I have wings to fly!”
Lead Technologist
Marilyn Maloney, REEGT, REPT has been working with Dr. Shafer since 1998 as his lead Technologist. Their time together started several years before 1983. Dr. Shafer and Marilyn have worked together for 34 years. Marylyn was his Board Examining Technologist when he took his Neuro-diagnostic Boards prior to becoming a physician.
Dr. Shafer, a life-long resident of Vero Beach, has been practicing Neurology here since 1997. Stacy Smith, PA-C joined him in 2000. Together they bring nearly 50 years of caring for patients of Vero Beach and the surrounding communities.

Dr. S. James Shafer, a local resident since 1977, has practiced Adult Neurology in Vero Beach and the surrounding area since 1997.
Stacy, a lifelong area resident, completed her Physician Assistant training in 2000, joining Dr. Shafer upon graduation.
A medical team would not be complete without a comprehensive medical staff. We are honored to work along side some of the best in the business.
Our Research Clinic has participated in over 40 National and International trials of which Dr. Shafer has been a Principal Investigator or Sub-Principal Investigator. We currently are enrolling patient in the following clinical trials.
